The average West Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so better not forget that rivers here are less demanding. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. The beautiful Cumberland Plateau Mountains scenery is an added bonus. And of course, there
are campgrounds nearby. This section of Big Sandy River - Tug Fork in Mingo WV/Pike KY County is 8.8 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II section. The Wharncliffe to Devon stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system. A good workout
and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, good for a one day paddling trip.
