The wonderful Pochantas / Randolph County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Cheat River - Shavers Fork make the trip here worthwhile. This section of Cheat River - Shavers Fork in Pochantas / Randolph County is 11 miles long and has been rated as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people. The average West Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so don't forget that the rivers
in this state are less demanding. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so why not pack your
camp stove too. The US Route 250 to MCamp Groundee Run stretch is one of many paddling stretches in this river system. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of rivers for that.
Briefly about the general area: Going for a hike on the Whitmeadow Hunter Access Trail is always a fine adventure, and there are pleasant places to look at along the Crouch Ridge Trail. All the water falling down from the sky makes Cheat River - Shavers Fork a wet place; most of the
rain falls during July, and February meanwhile is the driest month. During the long summer days at Cheat River - Shavers Fork highs are ordinarily in the 70's. For the period of the moonlight hours it's ordinarily in the 50's. Highs throughout the winter are typically in the 30's; through the dark hours in the wintertime at Cheat River - Shavers Fork temperatures descend to the 10's.
