The scenic beauty of Nicholas County and the cool fresh water have people coming here. The Watergate Inn to Gauley River section of Cherry River is 9 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there     are a few others too. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of people. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Briefly about the general area: During the warm months at Cherry River highs are mostly in the 80's. Throughout the dark hours of summer temperatures sink down into the 60's. All through the wintertime highs are mostly in the 40's, and nighttime lows at Cherry River through the winter usually plunge into the 20's. Near Cherry River you discover the Perry Ridge Trail which is a pleasant hiking trail, and going   for a hike on the Harris Siding Trail is always a good adventure. Cherry River gets much water; the month with most of the rain is July, and January on the other hand is the driest.
