The natural beauty of West Virginia and the playfulness of the water beats anything. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in West Virginia tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so don't forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. The Junction with Quarry Run to Cheat Lake section of Clay Run is 0.5 miles long and it is classified as a class V+ section by American Whitewater. This stretch is very short so no need to bring snacks. If you're coming from Morgantown it's not a long drive at all to the starting location,
there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking,
either way there are lots of good rivers for that around here. Clay Run doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Junction with Quarry Run to Cheat Lake stretch is the only one. There are some good hotels near the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
Briefly about the general area: A typical amount of rainfall falls here at Clay Run; during July this area sees the most rain, and February meanwhile is the driest month. For the duration of the summertime highs here at Clay Run reach the 80's, and throughout
the night it cools down to the 50's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 30's; night lows through the wintertime for Clay Run tend to be in the 10's. If you would like a little side tour, try Birch Hollow, and a cool spot to go to is Coopers Rock. Clay Run is not far at all from Morgantown, and don't leave Clay Run without first paying a visit to Philip Mascioli Spring. This is such a fun river.
