The average West Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be easier to run than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. The Junction with Quarry Run to Cheat Lake section of Clay Run in Monongalia County is 0.5 miles long and it is classified as a class V+ section by American Whitewater. The wonderful Monongalia County scenery and the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near
the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. There's camping available near Clay Run. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Morgantown, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Since you're on
this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of spots for that. This section is very short so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. Clay Run doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Junction with Quarry Run to Cheat Lake stretch is the only one.
Briefly about the general area: At Clay Run you always meet someone from Morgantown, and Coopers Rock is an interesting thing to catch a sight of since you're here. Through the summer at Clay Run highs are usually in the 80's.
Once the sun is down it plunges down to the 50's. High temperatures during the winter are normally in the 30's with winter lows in the 10's overnight here at Clay Run. The amount of precipitation that falls at Clay Run is close to the national average; most of the rain falls
during July, and February is when it's the driest. Philip Mascioli Spring is a nice local attraction, and a delightful site to take a look at is Birch Hollow. This is a great river.
