The nature scenery of West Virginia and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. The average West Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so better not forget that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. This section of Cranberry River in Pocahontas/Webster County is 6 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III-IV section. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the Cranberry Recreation Area to Big Rock stretch is one of them.
On this section you do get some distance, it's perfect for a one day trip. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for
more. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.
Briefly about the general area: If you're here, you might as well go to Pheasant Hollow, and if you're here you can take a hike along the Pocahontas Trail. Cranberry River is a wet location that gets a good deal of rain; the month with most of the rain is July; February is the month with the least moisture. During the summer months, highs commonly are in the 80's at Cranberry River,
and through summer nights temperatures are in the 50's. During the winter highs are in the 40's; after the sun is down through the wintertime temperatures at Cranberry River fall into the 10's. On a good day at Cranberry River you can take a hike along the Big Run Trail.
