The scenic beauty of Pocahontas/Webster County and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The Cranberry Recreation Area to Big Rock stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system. This section of Cranberry River in Pocahontas/Webster County is 6 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III-IV section of whitewater. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, good for a one day paddling trip. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in West Virginia are often easier
than in other states, so keep in mind that many runs in this state are very easy. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots. If
you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination.
Briefly about the general area: The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 80's to Cranberry River while night lows are regularly in the 50's. Highs during the wintertime are mostly in the 40's; through the dark hours in the wintertime at Cranberry River temperatures plunge to the 10's. Don't leave Cranberry
River without first going for a hike along the Pocahontas Trail, and Pheasant Hollow is without doubt a pleasant location to go to. A great deal of rainfall falls at Cranberry River; the month of July is the wettest with most of the rain, and the driest of the months is February. Good hiking is available along the Big Run Trail.
