The natural beauty of Fayette County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water have people coming here. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in West Virginia are often more forgiving than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. The Harvey to New River at Thurmond section of Dunloup Creek in Fayette County is 6 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class III-IV section. The campgrounds here at Dunloup Creek are pretty good. The
starting location is a reasonable drive from Oak Hill, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. No shortage of good hotels, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Great exercise and just being out on the
river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. Dunloup Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Harvey to New River at Thurmond section is the only one. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of rivers for that.
Briefly about the general area: The high level of precipitation makes Dunloup Creek a relatively wet place; during July this area sees the most rain while February is the month with the least amount of precipitation. High temperatures at Dunloup
Creek during the summertime months are in the 80's, and through summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. Daytime highs through the wintertime are in the 40's, and winter nights come with lows in the 20's to Dunloup Creek. Bluestone National Scenic River is a brilliant local destination here at Dunloup Creek, and if you're going to from Oak Hill, you won't be the only one.
