The scenic beauty of West Virginia and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. This stretch of Gauley River in West Virginia is 7 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II section. This is a pretty decent length section, it's perfect for a one day trip. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. There are so many sections to paddle in this river system, the Bolair to Donaldson section is just one of many. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get
to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in West Virginia tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so keep in mind that many runs in this state are very easy. Since you're on this site you
are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp.
Briefly about the general area: There are good sites to look at along the Snakeden Trail, and Hickman Hollow is absolutely a great spot to stop at. Going for a hike on the Adkin Rockhouse Trail is always a great adventure. Gauley River sees pretty high levels of rain; the month of July is the wettest with most of the rain; the driest month of the year is January.
The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 80's to Gauley River, and during the night it cools down to the 60's. The winter brings highs down to the 40's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at Gauley River.
