If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so better not forget that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. The scenic beauty of Webster County and the water flowing gracefully down Gauley River are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. This stretch of Gauley River in Webster County is 7 miles long and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you
might end up sleeping in your car. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you'll find a large number of good places. On this section you do get some distance, good for
a one day paddling trip. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well.
Briefly about the general area: Gauley River sees pretty high levels of rainfall; most of the rain falls all through July while January is the month with the least amount of precipitation. Go for a hike on the Snakeden Trail. Gauley River is in close proximity to Hickman Hollow which is certainly worth visiting, and going for a hike on the Adkin Rockhouse Trail is always a magnificent adventure. The warmest time of the year brings
highs in the 80's to Gauley River. Through the moonlight hours it's regularly in the 60's. Highs throughout the winter are commonly in the 40's with temperatures at Gauley River dipping down into the 20's all through winter nights.
