West Virginia whitewater - Gauley River, Nicholas/Fayette County
Nicholas/Fayette
county,
Bucklick Branch to Swiss section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS III-IV(V) 11 miles
The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Oak Hill, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The beautiful scenery of Nicholas/Fayette County and the cool fresh water will make you feel great. The average West Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be easier to run than those in other states, so keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to
get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This stretch of Gauley River is 11 miles long and is a class III-IV(V) section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The campgrounds here at Gauley River are pretty good. If you hurry
you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that. This is not the only paddling stretch in this river system, there are others too.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime brings highs in the 80's to Gauley River. Throughout the dark hours of summer temperatures drop down into the 60's. High temperatures through the winter are normally in the 40's while Gauley River overnight low temperatures
during the wintertime are in the 20's. The high level of rainfall makes Gauley River a rather wet place; through July this area sees the most rain, and February meanwhile is the driest month. A short tour to Upper Mash Rapids is always worthwhile, and if you fancy a little side journey, try Lower Elk Hollow. Heaven Help You Rapids is always fun to check out.
