This section of Gauley River in Nicholas/Fayette County is 11 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III-IV(V) section. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your camp stove. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often easier than elsewhere, so better not forget that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area     has a large number of paddling places. Getting some good exercise and spending some quality time in nature will have you coming back for more. There are plenty of other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. There's camping available near Gauley River. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Briefly about the general area: All the water falling down from the sky makes Gauley River a wet spot; the wettest month of the year is commonly July, that's the one that rains the most; February is the month with the least moisture. It's always great to visit Heaven Help You Rapids. During the summertime months here at Gauley River, high temperatures usually get into the 80's while night lows are typically   in the 60's. Throughout the winter highs are usually in the 40's, and night lows in the 20's for Gauley River. Near Gauley River you stumble on Lower Elk Hollow which is a tremendous spot to pop by, and Upper Mash Rapids is a great local attraction.
