The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Oak Hill, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The campgrounds here at Gauley River are pretty good. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so why not pack your camping stuff too. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem
but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This section of Gauley River in West Virginia is 11 miles long and is a class III-IV(V) section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is
an area with plenty of rivers for that. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. The wonderful West Virginia scenery and the playfulness of the water have people coming here.
Briefly about the general area: Upper Mash Rapids is a good local attraction. High temperatures at Gauley River through the warm months are in the 80's. For the duration of the dark hours of summer temperatures dip down into the 60's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 40's while the
cold winter nights at Gauley River are in the 20's. Gauley River is a relatively wet place regularly with a lot of rain; July is the month that gets the most rain, and the driest month is February. Put some time aside to spend at Heaven Help You Rapids if you're here at Gauley River; a great location nearby is Lower Elk Hollow.
