The nature scenery of Wyoming County and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The Simon to R D Bailey Lake backwaters stretch of Guyandotte River in West Virginia is 8 miles long and is a class I-III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. Guyandotte River doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Simon to R D Bailey Lake backwaters stretch is the only one. You
might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of places for that. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. For all you camping people there
are campgrounds nearby. This stretch is mid length, suitable for an afternoon trip. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside West Virginia you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime highs at Guyandotte River usually tend to be in the 80's. Summer overnight lows drop down to the 60's. During the wintertime the highs are mostly in the 40's; after the sun is down all through the winter temperatures
at Guyandotte River dip into the 20's. All the water falling down from the sky makes Guyandotte River a wet location; of all the months in a year July is the one with the most rain, and October is when it's the driest. A tremendous site in close proximity to Guyandotte River is Barn Hollow.
