The scenic beauty of West Virginia and the water flowing gracefully down Lost River are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The put-in location is a short drive from Winchester, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near. The average West Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so better not forget that lots of rivers here are good for beginners.
If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This section of Lost River in West
Virginia is 15 miles long and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling places. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Lost River to West Virginia 55/259 section is one of them. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so go ahead and pack your sleeping bag.
Briefly about the general area: It's always pleasant to stop at Reed Farm Spring, and the Brushy Hollow Trail is a perfect hiking
trail close by. Put some time aside to spend at Bob Rawlins Spring since you're here at Lost River, and nearby you discover the Crack Whip Furnace Trail which is a magnificent hiking trail. At this river you will always have a good time. Lost River gets a typical amount of
yearly precipitation; the month of July is the wettest with most of the rain, and February is the month with the least moisture. Summertime highs at Lost River usually tend to be in the 80's. Once the sun is down it drops down to the 60's. During the winter the highs are ordinarily in the 30's; night lows in the 10's for Lost River.
