This section of Lost River in West Virginia is 6 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-III(IV) section of whitewater. The natural beauty of West Virginia and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in West Virginia tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so you'd better keep in mind that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. This stretch is mid length, it's perfect for a one day trip. You might
have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this
river system, there are a few others too. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Winchester, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page.
Briefly about the general area: Don't leave Lost River without first paying a visit to Landecker Farm Spring, and going for a hike on the Halfmoon Lookout Trail is always a good adventure. Cold Spring is an inspiring site to check out while you're here, and you can go for a hike on
the Squirrel Gap Trail. An average amount of rainfall falls at Lost River; during the month of July you get the most rain around here while February is regularly the driest month. At Lost River through the summer months highs are in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures
descend down into the 60's. Through the winter highs are in the 30's with winter lows in the 10's overnight here at Lost River. Coming to this river is always a good idea.
