CLASS I-II(III) 1 miles
This is an answer to Cindy's question about the Guyandotte River. There is a put-in at Branchland, then a take-out 3 1/2 hours downstream at Salt Rock. A very nice float with a few riffles, lots of fish and wildlife for viewing. You can also put-in or take-out at the mouth of Mud river in Barboursville which is good for a Mud River or Guyandotte River float. Salt Rock to B'ville would be a great all day float on the Guyandotte, I'm guessing 10 to 12 miles. Says Mike
There is no way there could be any rapids on the Mud River. I agree with the
writer below. However, I would love to flatwater kayak down the Guyan which is closer to Beech Fork State Park than the Mud. It connects to the Mud in Barboursville and runs into the Ohio a few miles later. It should be a very plesant peaceful trip. I just can not locate a putin
spot. Can any one help? I live 10 miles away from the BF campground. Thanks Says Cindy
There is no whitewater on the Mud River. I have walked and canoed the Mud River many times. There might be a few ripples if there's enough water in the river. During the summer months it looks more like a creek rather than a river. Don't get excited or waste your time. The Mud River is a great place to go Muskie fishing. If your want a true whitewater experience go to the New River of Gauley River. Says Jim
This section of Mud River in West Virginia
is 1 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II(III) section. The starting location is a short drive from Huntington-Ashland, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The scenic beauty of West Virginia and
the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. This is a very short stretch so no need to bring snacks. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your
car. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. The Ona to Blue Sulphur Road bridge stretch is the only paddling stretch along Mud River. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in West Virginia is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're visiting
here do keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners.
Briefly about the general area: A great site next to Mud River is Cow Hollow. Mud River gets a good deal of water; July is the wettest month with most rain; January is when it's the driest. For
