The nature scenery of West Virginia and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This section of New River in Summers/ Fayette/ Raleigh County is 11 miles long and has been rated as a class I-III(IV) section by American Whitewater. There are so many stretches to paddle in this river system, the Bluestone Dam to Sandstone stretch is just one of many. If you're coming from Oak Hill it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t
get lost. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so pack your sleeping bag. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master in this state than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many runs in
this state are very easy. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come.
Briefly about the general area: All through the summer, highs generally are in the 80's at New River. When the night sets in temperatures dip down into the 50's. Daytime highs through
the wintertime are in the 30's, and overnight lows all through the wintertime for New River tend to be in the 10's. New River gets a good deal of water; July is when you get the most rain here while February is the month with the least amount of precipitation. Collins Hollow is a brilliant place to stop at nearby; a short spree to Brooks Falls is always worthwhile.
