The starting point is not too far from Oak Hill, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The Bluestone Dam to Sandstone stretch of New River is 11 miles long and has been rated as a class I-III(IV) section by American Whitewater. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in West Virginia is often easier than elsewhere, so don't forget that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time in nature have people coming from far and near. There are nice comfortable hotels here,
and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The scenic beauty of West Virginia and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. The Bluestone Dam to Sandstone stretch
is one of many paddling stretches in this river system. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime highs at New River mostly tend to be in the 80's. Once the sun is down it falls down to the 50's. The winter brings highs down to the 30's while New River night low temperatures all through the winter are in the 10's. If you're here, you might as well visit Collins Hollow; Brooks Falls is always fun to check out. New River ordinarily gets lots of precipitation; July is the wettest month with most rain, and February is the month with the least moisture.
