The nature scenery of West Virginia and the water flowing gracefully down New River will make you feel great. The Bluestone Dam to Sandstone stretch of New River in West Virginia is 11 miles long and has been rated as a class I-III(IV) section by American Whitewater. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. This stretch has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so pack your camp stove. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more
forgiving, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many runs in this state are very easy. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Oak Hill, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. Since you're on this site you are
probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. There are so many stretches to paddle in this river system, the Bluestone Dam to Sandstone stretch is just one of many. The campgrounds here at New River are pretty good.
Briefly about the general area: New River is a wet site that gets a lot of rainfall; July is the month that gets the most rain, and the driest month is February. During the summertime highs here at New River reach the 80's, and through the night it cools down to
the 50's. The winter comes with highs in the 30's; overnight lows at New River during the wintertime commonly drop into the 10's. Since you're here at New River why not stop at Collins Hollow; the beauty of mother nature reveals herself at Brooks Falls.
