West Virginia whitewater - New River, Summers/ Fayette County
Summers/ Fayette
county,
Sandstone to McCreery section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I-III 15 miles
This section of New River is 15 miles long and is a class I-III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're not from around here don't forget that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. The wonderful Summers/ Fayette County scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from
the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The Sandstone to McCreery section is one of many paddling sections in this river system. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. This section has enough
mileage for an overnight trip, so pack your camp stove. The put-in location is a short drive from Oak Hill, as you can see on the road map further down. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling places. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time in nature will make you glad you came.
