This stretch of New River in West Virginia is 15 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. The natural beauty of Fayette/Raleigh County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water have people coming here. If you're coming from Oak Hill it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. There's camping available near New
River. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in West Virginia are often more forgiving than in other states, so don't forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time in nature are great attractions for
lots of people. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots. There are plenty of other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well.
Briefly about the general area: At New River through the summer highs are in the 80's. Summer night lows descend down to the 60's. For the period of the winter highs are in the 40's while the cold winter nights at New River are in the 20's. If time allows, Bluestone National Scenic River is a national park worth stopping at. A good deal of rainfall falls at New River; July is the wettest month with most rain, and the driest of the months is February.
