Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in West Virginia are easier than the national norm, so keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. The put-in is not too far from Oak Hill, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The natural beauty of Fayette/Raleigh County and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. The campgrounds here at New River are pretty good. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so why not pack your camping stuff too. There are plenty of other sections
in this river system that can be paddled as well. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good places. The McCreery to Thurmond stretch of New River in West Virginia is 15 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III section
by American Whitewater. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more.
Briefly about the general area: Don't miss out on a trip to Bluestone National Scenic River since you're here at New River. All the water falling down from the sky makes New River a wet place; July is the month that gets the most rain, and the driest month is February. Summer at New River comes with high temperatures in the 80's. For the period of the moonlight hours it's generally in the 60's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 40's; after the sun is down through the winter temperatures at New River descend into the 20's.
