West Virginia whitewater - New River, Fayette/Raleigh County
Fayette/Raleigh
county,
McCreery to Thurmond section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-III 15 miles
The nature scenery of Fayette/Raleigh County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream have people coming here. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in West Virginia are often easier than in other states, so don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. This stretch of New River in Fayette/Raleigh County is 15 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III section. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll
have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your camp stove. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots
of good spots for that around here. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. If you're coming from Oak Hill it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that.
