The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in West Virginia are often more forgiving than in other states, so don't forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. The Thurmond to Cunard stretch of New River in unknown County is 7 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-III section. On this section you do get some distance, you can easily run it on an afternoon. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The beautiful scenery of unknown County and the water flowing gracefully
down New River will make you feel great. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too. If you're coming from Oak Hill it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the
page. No shortage of good hotels, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good places for that around here.
Briefly about the general area: All through the days of summer at New River temperatures are generally in the 80's while overnight lows are regularly in the 60's. Throughout the wintertime highs are ordinarily in the 40's,
and nighttime lows in the 20's for New River. New River sees pretty high levels of rain; the wettest month of the year is frequently July, that's the one that rains the most, and February is when it's the driest.
