The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Oak Hill, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The scenic beauty of Fayette County and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. This stretch of New River is 6.5 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III-IV+(V) section of whitewater. No shortage of good hotels, but if you don’t have reservations
you might end up sleeping in your car. This stretch is mid length, suitable for an afternoon trip. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. This river system is full of great paddling
sections, the Cunard to Fayette Station section is just one of them. The average West Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be easier to run than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that lots of rivers here are good for beginners.
Briefly about the general area: A magnificent place next to New River is Toney Hollow, and you'll most likely meet some people from Oak Hill here. New River is a relatively wet place generally with a large amount of rain; of all the months in a year July is the one with the most
rain while February is frequently the driest month. For the period of the warm months here at New River, high temperatures ordinarily reach the 80's. During the dark hours of summer temperatures drop down into the 60's. High temperatures through the winter are normally in the 40's; throughout the dark hours in the wintertime at New River temperatures drop to the 20's.
