If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside West Virginia you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling rivers. The Hawks Nest Dam     to Gauley Bridge section of New River in Fayette County is 6 miles long and has been rated as a class III-IV(V) section by American Whitewater. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. If you're coming from Oak Hill it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. Briefly about the general area: All through the summertime months, highs usually are in the 80's at New River with night lows in the 60's. During the winter highs are generally in the 40's, and night lows through the wintertime for New River tend to be in the 20's. The high level of rainfall makes New River a relatively wet site; the month with most of the rain is July while February is generally the driest month.
