If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are less demanding. The put-in is not too far from Oak Hill, as you can see on the road map further down. The Hawks Nest Dam to Gauley Bridge section of New River in West Virginia is 6 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III-IV(V) section. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers.
The nature scenery of Fayette County and the water flowing gracefully down New River beats anything. There are so many sections to paddle in this river system, the Hawks Nest Dam to Gauley Bridge section is just one of many. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing
to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. This is a pretty decent length section, it's perfect for a one day trip.
