This stretch of Red Creek in West Virginia is 7.2 miles long and has been rated as a class V+ section by American Whitewater. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. The wonderful West Virginia scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Red Creek will make you feel great. This is a pretty decent length section, suitable for an afternoon trip. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. There's camping available near Red Creek. The average
whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master in this state than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd
better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
Briefly about the general area: Coming to this river is always a good idea. At Red Creek during the warm months highs are in the 80's while night lows are commonly in the 50's. Daytime highs all through the wintertime are in the 30's while the cold winter nights at Red Creek are in the 10's. Don't leave Red Creek without first paying a visit to Hoyt Pennington Spring, and nearby you discover the Red Creek Trail which is a great hiking trail. A day on the slopes of Timberline is
just what you need, and there is a splendid hiking trail nearby called the Dunkenbarger Trail. The high level of rain makes Red Creek a pretty wet place; July is when you get the most rain here; February meanwhile is the driest month.
