West Virginia whitewater - Roaring Creek, Preston County
Preston
county,
County Road 3-12 to Cheat River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS IV 6.1 miles
The wonderful Preston County scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. The average West Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be easier to run than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. This river system has a few good paddling stretches and the County Road 3-12 to Cheat River section is one of them. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you
might end up sleeping in your car. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good places for that around here. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The County Road 3-12 to Cheat River stretch of Roaring
Creek is 6.1 miles long and is a class IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. On this section you do get some distance, suitable for an afternoon trip.
Briefly about the general area: Roaring Creek gets a large amount of water; of all the months in a year July is the one with the most rain, and the driest of the months is February.
