The scenic beauty of Upshur County and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. The Confluence of Beech Run to confluence of Buckhannon River stretch of Sand Run in West Virginia is 6.4 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II(III) section. The starting location is a short drive from Clarksburg, as you can see on the road map further down. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance
then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere.
A good workout and spending some quality time in nature will have you coming back for more. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, suitable for an afternoon trip. There are no other stretches to paddle along Sand Run than the Confluence of Beech Run to confluence of Buckhannon River stretch. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby.
Briefly about the general area: Sand Run is a pretty wet place regularly with a great deal of rainfall; through July this area sees the most rain, and the driest month is October. Excelsior School
Spring is an inspiring location to take a look at while you're here. At Sand Run during the warmest time of the year highs are in the 80's. Once the sun is down it dips down to the 50's. Daytime highs all through the wintertime are in the 30's, and winter nights come with lows in the 10's to Sand Run.
