The put-in location is a short drive from Clarksburg, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. This stretch of Sand Run in Upshur County is 6.4 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II(III) section. The scenic beauty of Upshur County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The average West Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be easier to run than those in other states, so don't forget that many of the sections
here are safe for beginners. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Sand Run doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches,
the Confluence of Beech Run to confluence of Buckhannon River stretch is the only one. This stretch is mid length, good for a one day paddling trip. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling places.
Briefly about the general area: Put some time aside to spend at Excelsior School Spring since you're here at Sand Run. For the duration of the summer at Sand Run temperatures are commonly in the 80's with overnight lows in the 50's. For the period of the wintertime the highs are regularly
in the 30's; nighttime lows at Sand Run during the wintertime usually dip into the 10's. Sand Run is a wet place that gets much rainfall; the month with most of the rain is July, and October is when it's the driest.
