This stretch of Sand Run in Upshur County is 6.4 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II(III) section. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in West Virginia are often more forgiving than in other states, so better not forget that quite a few of the sections
here are pretty easy. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. There are no other stretches to paddle along Sand Run than the Confluence of Beech
Run to confluence of Buckhannon River stretch. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. The campgrounds here at Sand Run are pretty good. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places.
Briefly about the general area: Through the warm days of summer here at Sand Run, high temperatures commonly get into the 80's. For the
duration of the dark hours of summer temperatures plunge down into the 50's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 30's while the cold winter nights at Sand Run are in the 10's. All the water falling down from the sky makes Sand Run a wet site; during the month of July you get
the most rain around here, and October on the other hand is the driest. A journey to Excelsior School Spring will fill your spirit with pleasant feelings.
