The scenic beauty of West Virginia and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford, as you can see on the road map further down. This stretch of Second Creek in Monroe County is 8.2 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-III section. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good rivers for that around
here. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This stretch has has enough mileage, good for a one day paddling trip. For all you camping people there are campgrounds
nearby. The Hollywood to US 219 bridge stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system.
Briefly about the general area: Don't leave Second Creek without first paying a visit to Big Spring. Second Creek is a wet place that gets lots of rainfall; the wettest month of the year is usually July, that's the one that rains the most, and January is the month with the least moisture. Throughout the warm days of summer at Second Creek temperatures are regularly in the 70's, and through the night it cools down to the 50's. Throughout the wintertime this place gets highs in the 30's while the cold winter nights at Second Creek are in the 10's.
