The scenic beauty of Jefferson County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. This section of Shenandoah River in West Virginia is 3.7 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II section. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Hagerstown-Martinsburg, as you can see on the road map further down. This is not the only paddling stretch in this river system, there are others too. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this
is an area with plenty of spots for that. The average West Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so don't forget that many runs in this state are very easy. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but you'd
better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This is a pretty short section so better bring some good walking shoes. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby.
Briefly about the general area: Through the summer, highs typically are in the 80's at Shenandoah River. Once the sun is down it descends down to the 60's. Daytime highs during the winter are in the 30's; after the sun is down throughout the winter temperatures at Shenandoah River fall into the 20's. A typical amount of rain falls here at Shenandoah
River; May is when you get the most rain here, and January is when it's the driest. This is a really good river. Wilt Farm Spring is an inspiring site to take a look at while you're here, and Shenandoah River is right by the Loudoun Heights Trail. Don't leave Shenandoah River
without first paying a visit to Johnson Springs, and do pay a visit to Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail while you're here at Shenandoah River.
