The wonderful West Virginia scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Sleepy Creek are reasons enough to come here and paddle. If you're coming from Hagerstown-Martinsburg it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The CR 9 to Potomac confluence section of Sleepy Creek in West Virginia is 7.7 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II section. The average West Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be easier to run
than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers here are less demanding. On this section you do get some distance, you can easily run it on an afternoon. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations
you might end up sleeping in your car. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good rivers for that around here. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too.
Briefly about the general area: High temperatures at Sleepy Creek through the summertime are in the 80's, and throughout
summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. Daytime highs through the wintertime are in the 30's with temperatures at Sleepy Creek dipping down into the 10's through winter nights. Sleepy Creek gets a normal amount of yearly precipitation; May is the wettest month with most
rain, and the driest month is February. Michael Farm Spring is a wonderful location to stop by while you're at Sleepy Creek, and a glorious place is Swim Hollow.
