The Vepco Dam to Route 50 section of Stony River is 7.6 miles long and is a class III+ section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside West Virginia you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so better not forget that rivers here are less demanding. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of people. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. The campgrounds here at Stony River are pretty good. This is one
of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way
this area has a large number of paddling places.
Briefly about the general area: High temperatures at Stony River through the warm days of summer are in the 70's. For the duration of the dark hours of summer temperatures drop down into the 50's. For the period of the wintertime the highs are mostly in the 30's, and after the sun is down during the winter temperatures at Stony River drop into the 10's. All the water falling down from the sky makes Stony River a wet place; of all the months in a year July is the one with the most rain; February meanwhile is the driest month.
