The wonderful West Virginia scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water have people coming here. This section of Stony River in West Virginia is 6.7 miles long and it is classified as a class III-IV section by American Whitewater. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Route 50 to North Branch of Potomac River section is one of them.
Lodging is available near the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's good length for a morning trip. Great exercise
and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good places. If you're coming from Cumberland it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down.
Briefly about the general area: At Stony River through the summer highs are in the 70's. Once the sun is down it plunges down to the 50's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 30's, and overnight lows in the 10's for Stony River. Stony River
is a wet place that gets lots of rain; the month of July is the wettest with most of the rain, and the driest of the months is February.
