This stretch of Stony River is 6.7 miles long and is a class III-IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The average West Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be easier to run than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many runs in this state are very easy. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of
good rivers for that around here. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. The campgrounds here at Stony River are pretty good. This stretch is mid length, good for a one day paddling trip. You might have to settle for a hotel
a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The beautiful scenery of Grant County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water make the trip here worthwhile. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Route 50 to North Branch of Potomac River section is one of them.
Briefly about the general area: Through the long summer days, highs frequently are in the 70's at Stony River. Throughout the dark hours of summer temperatures fall down into
the 50's. The winter comes with highs in the 30's; nighttime lows throughout the winter for Stony River tend to be in the 10's. All the water falling down from the sky makes Stony River a wet site; July is when you get the most rain here, and the driest month is February.
