This stretch of Waites Run in West Virginia is 6.8 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-IV section. The wonderful Hardy County scenery and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. If you're coming from Winchester it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but
do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in West Virginia are often easier than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. The
Wilson Cove to West Virginia 55 stretch is the only paddling stretch along Waites Run. This stretch is mid length, it's perfect for a one day trip. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of spots for that. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground.
Briefly about the general area: This river is always fun. The peaks of the Great North Mountain dominate the scenery of this neighborhood. There are magnificent places to look at along the Halfmoon Lookout
Trail, and Wardensville Spring is an inspiring place to visit during your stay. Going for a hike on the Peer Trail is always a delightful adventure; don't leave Waites Run without first paying a visit to Richard Farm Spring. Through the long summer days highs here at Waites
Run reach the 80's. Summer night lows plunge down to the 60's. High temperatures through the wintertime are normally in the 30's, and overnight lows in the 10's for Waites Run. A normal amount of rainfall falls here at Waites Run; July is the wettest month with most rain, and the driest month of the year is February.
