This stretch of Waites Run in Hardy County is 6.8 miles long and is a class II-IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in West Virginia is often easier than elsewhere, so don't forget that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. If you're coming from Winchester it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots. There
are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because
these hotels fill up quick. Waites Run doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Wilson Cove to West Virginia 55 section is the only one. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. The natural beauty of West Virginia and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle.
Briefly about the general area: Waites Run gets a normal amount of annual rain; July is the wettest month with most rain; February is the month with the least moisture. This is such
a great river. The landscape around Waites Run is dominated by the Great North Mountain. Waites Run is right by the Halfmoon Lookout Trail, and the beauty of mother nature reveals herself at Richard Farm Spring. High temperatures at Waites Run throughout the long summer days
are in the 80's. Throughout the dark hours of summer temperatures plunge down into the 60's. All through the winter highs are in the 30's, and through the dark hours in the wintertime at Waites Run temperatures drop to the 10's. The Peer Trail offers hiking at its best, and a journey to Waites Run wouldn't be complete without taking a look at Wardensville Spring.
