The starting location is a short drive from Winchester, as you can see on the road map further down. The wonderful Hardy County scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in West Virginia tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so better not forget that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The Wilson Cove to West Virginia 55 section of Waites Run in Hardy County is 6.8 miles
long and has been rated as a class II-IV section by American Whitewater. This is the only paddling stretch along Waites Run. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good rivers. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river
for a while are great attractions for lots of people. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This stretch has has enough mileage, it's perfect for a one day trip.
Briefly about the general area: Waites Run gets a normal amount of yearly rainfall; the month of July is the wettest with most of the rain; the driest month of the year is February. The Great North Mountain towers over Waites Run, and Wardensville Spring is a pleasant local attraction. A river like
this is too good to miss. Hiking is a popular thing to do around Waites Run; Peer Trail is a good local trail. Summer brings highs in the 80's to Waites Run, and through summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. Through the wintertime highs are commonly in the 30's with winter
lows in the 10's overnight here at Waites Run. Richard Farm Spring is a striking place to visit while you're at Waites Run; the Halfmoon Lookout Trail offers hiking at its best.
