Wisconsin whitewater - Black Creek, Marathon County Marathon county, Athens City Park to Pioneer Road section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-II     1.4 miles   This section of Black Creek in Marathon County is 1.4 miles long and it is classified as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. The beautiful scenery of Wisconsin and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you feel great. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby     campground. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with not too many other spots for that. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. This is an extremely short stretch so no need to bring snacks. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Wausau, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The Athens City Park to Pioneer Road section is the only paddling section along Black Creek. Briefly about the general area: All through the summer here at Black Creek, high temperatures mostly get into the 70's with nighttime lows in the 50's. Highs during the winter are mostly   in the 10's while Black Creek night low temperatures all through the wintertime are in the-10's. Black Creek is a good place of common rainfall; most of the rain falls during September while February is ordinarily the driest month.
