The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Wisconsin are often more forgiving than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. This stretch of Potato River in Wisconsin is 7.2 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-IV section of whitewater. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good spots for that around here. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. This section
is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, you can easily run it on an afternoon. The beautiful scenery of Iron County and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature will make
you glad you came. Whitewater paddling here in the Gogebic Range is a great experience. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Foster Falls to Highway 169 section is one of them. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
Briefly about the general area: You'll never forgive yourself if you don’t go skiing at Whitecap Mountain since you're here. High temperatures at Potato River throughout the long summer days are in the
70's. Summer nighttime lows dip down to the 50's. For the duration of the winter this place gets highs in the 20's, and all through the dark hours in the winter at Potato River temperatures drop to the 0's. From a rainfall point of view Potato River is a quite normal location; of all the months in a year August is the one with the most rain, and February on the other hand is the driest.
