Wisconsin whitewater - Robinson Creek, Jackson County
Jackson
county,
Kelly Road to W Pine Hill Road section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I-II(III) 4.9 miles
The Kelly Road to W Pine Hill Road section of Robinson Creek is 4.9 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-II(III) section of whitewater. The wonderful Jackson County scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream beats anything. On this section you do get some distance, suitable for an afternoon trip. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so better not forget that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. You can pitch a tent or park your
RV at a nearby campground. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Robinson Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Kelly Road to W Pine Hill Road section is the
only one. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of rivers for that.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime at Robinson Creek comes with high temperatures in the 80's; the nighttime is a bit cooler of course, usually in the 50's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 10's with temperatures at Robinson Creek dipping down into the-10's during winter nights. From a precipitation point of view Robinson Creek is a quite typical place; most of the rain falls during September, and February meanwhile is the driest month. A short visit to Polly Falls is always worthwhile.
Although this route is a beautiful paddle, it is no longer regularly maintained by the Sierra Club, the local property owners or a paddling club. For this reason, unless you are prepared to drag you boat over or around substantial log jams with strong undertows, take out is recommended at Fall-Hall Road. If you'd like to see the F-H Glen, it is a 200yard paddle downstream around a bend to the glen. Secure permission to use the F-H Camp trails if you don't want to drag you boat back upstream. If you want to paddle Robinson Creek, a better put in is at the Old County Road I on the North side where there is a State Forest campsite near the ATV trails (permit req'd to camp)on the north side of the bridge. Along the way are several class I (II) riffles and a millpond dam with designated portage on the right. At Kelly Road, Portage to the right of the dam to avoid a sharp drop on the downstream side of the bridge. The rest of the trip includes some class II (III) runs with several unmarked falls of 4-7' which should be portaged. There were a couple of places to play in and, if waterflow was above average, runs that would challenge an intermediate paddler. My 13 yo son and I paddled and dragged our way to the Black River. After over a dozen log jams in the last two miles (and 2 hours) of creek, we camped on a sandbar 1/4 mile upstream of the Robinson Creek inlet. Total time 8 hours.
