Wisconsin whitewater - Root River, Racine County Racine county, Horlick Dam to Quarry Park section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II-III     0.4 miles   Very fun stretch of river, if there is water.  The root is best paddled the day after a rainfall.  Check the reports, it is not worth your time if the water is below 250cfs.  That is the absolute minimum.  There are 2 fun waves to surf, 3 in very high water.  Bring playboats, this stretch of whitewater is only about 500 yards.  Both waves have pretty good washout, there is a small hole on the lower wave, but not bad. Says Andy The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Wisconsin are often easier than in other states, so don't forget     that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. The beautiful scenery of Wisconsin and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water have people coming here. The starting point is not too far from Racine, as you can see on the road map further down. Root River doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Horlick Dam to Quarry Park section is the only one. There's camping available near Root River. This is an extremely short stretch so better bring some good walking shoes. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling places. The Horlick Dam to Quarry Park stretch of Root River is 0.4 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-III section of whitewater. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near the river,   but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people. Briefly about the general area: The warmest time of the year at Root River comes with high temperatures in the 80's. Summer nighttime lows dip down to the 60's. Throughout the winter highs are usually in the 20's, and after the sun is down through the winter temperatures at Root River descend into the 10's. The amount of rain that falls at Root River is close to the national average; the wettest month of the year is generally August, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest month of the year is February.
