Sauk
county,
Gasser Road section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS III-IV 1.8 miles
This stretch of Skillet Creek is 1.8 miles long and is a class III-IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. If you're coming from Baraboo it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. Skillet Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Gasser Road stretch is the only one. This is a somewhat short section so no need to bring snacks. The wonderful Sauk County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Skillet Creek make the trip here worthwhile. Whitewater rafting and kayaking
spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with not too many other
rivers for that. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. There are plenty of hotels here if you want to spend a night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.
Briefly about the general area: This is such a fun river. A short tour to Skillet Falls is always worthwhile; the landscape is dominated by the South Range. Skillet Creek is a good location of normal rainfall; of all the months in a year September is the one with the most rain; January is when it's the driest.
The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 80's to Skillet Creek. Once the sun is down it drops down to the 50's. During the wintertime the highs are regularly in the 20's while the cold winter nights at Skillet Creek are in the 0's. Going for a hike along the Bluff Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this vicinity, and since you're here you can take a hike along the West Bluff Trail.
