The Gilman to Mattes Bridge stretch of Yellow River in Taylor County is 8 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II section. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Wisconsin you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers here are less demanding. This stretch has has enough mileage, it's good length for a morning trip. The scenic beauty of Taylor County and the cool fresh
    water attract people from near and far. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near. This is the only paddling section along Yellow River. The campgrounds here at Yellow River are pretty good. Whether you're whitewater rafting
or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.

Briefly about the general area:
The yearly rain here at Yellow River is about average; the month of August is the wettest with most of the rain, and the driest of the months is February. High temperatures at Yellow River through the warmest time of the year are in the 80's while nighttime lows are commonly in the 50's. During the winter highs are in the 20's, and nighttime lows at Yellow River all through the wintertime mostly drop into the 0's.
