Wyoming whitewater - Deer Creek, Laramie Mountains, Converse County
Converse
county,
Lower Canyon section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS IV-V+ 6 miles
The nature scenery of Wyoming and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so better not forget that rivers here are not as easy as elsewhere. This stretch of Deer Creek in Converse County is 6 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class IV-V+ section. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the
river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The Lower Canyon stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system. The river winds through the Laramie Mountains and you get great scenery. If you're a camper
you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are not so many other good rivers for that around here.
Briefly about the general area: Deer Creek is typically a relatively dried up site; during the month of May you get the most rain around here, and the driest of the months is January. And if that's not enough there's loads more exciting stuff to do in the Laramie Mountains. Through the summertime months highs
here at Deer Creek get into the 80's with night lows in the 50's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 30's; nighttime lows in the 10's for Deer Creek. Lower Deer Creek Canyon is near Deer Creek and is a good spot, and a short tour to Phillips Spring is always worthwhile.
