Wyoming whitewater, Deer Creek

Converse county, Lower Canyon section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS IV-V+     6 miles
If you're coming from Casper it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The Lower Canyon section of Deer Creek in Converse County is 6 miles long and is a class IV-V+ section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Wyoming are often tougher than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers
here are not as easy as elsewhere. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Getting your paddling muscles activated
and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. The nature scenery of Wyoming and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream will make you feel great. When you're paddling down a Laramie Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both,
doesn't matter, in this general area you won't find many other paddling places. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby.

Briefly about the general area:
Lower Deer Creek Canyon is a great location to explore; do put some time aside to spend at Phillips Spring if you're here at Deer Creek. There's no way anybody can get bored here in the Laramie Mountains. Edness K. Wilkins State Park is a splendid place to stretch your legs a bit. Not much rain falls here at Deer Creek.
