Alabama whitewater, Black River

Etowah county, Noccalula Park campground to Tuscaloosa Avenue section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II-V+     1.5 miles
The starting location is a short drive from Gadsden, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The wonderful Etowah County scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water attract people from near and far. This section of Black River is 1.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-V+ section. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Since you're on this site you are
probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling rivers. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come. If you've been whitewater rafting
and kayaking outside Alabama you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so you'd better keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. Lodging is available near the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Noccalula Park campground to Tuscaloosa Avenue section is one of them.

Briefly about the general area:

Noccalula Falls is an inspiring location to explore while you're here; there are plenty of people from Gadsden here. The Brow is an interesting spot to visit while at Black River. For the period of the warm days of summer here at Black River, high temperatures regularly reach the 80's; the overnight is rather cooler of course, commonly in the 60's. Daytime highs through the winter are in the 40's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at Black River. The high level of rain makes Black River a rather wet place. Most of the rain falls through March, and October on the other hand is the driest.
