Actually, the dam was one of the first hydroelectric installations in the world. It was once regarded as a premier industrial stimulous for the mills in nearby Talledega, AL. it's worth landing when you get to the road (Left Side of the creek) and walking back to the old brick powerhouse. The concrete supports for the steel flume (dismantled along with the idle turbines during WWII) lead from the open section on the left side of the dam. The |
land is posted back from the bank (still owned by Alabama Power) but there is a trail along the bank. The transformer farm is the only part still left. Says W. Wood

The starting point is not too far from Talladega-Sylacauga, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The beautiful scenery of Talladega County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. | |

If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so don't forget that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. This section of Choccolocco Creek in Talladega
County is 2.5 miles long and it is classified as a class I(II) section by American Whitewater. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more. This is a short paddling stretch
so better bring some good walking shoes. The Jackson Trace to Highway 77 stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system. There's camping available near Choccolocco Creek.
