Alaska whitewater, Bird Creek 5 miles upstream to Turnagain Arm section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS V+     3.5 miles   The 5 miles upstream to Turnagain Arm section of Bird Creek is 3.5 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class V+ section of whitewater. The wonderful -blank- Borough scenery and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that. This is a short paddling stretch so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. This is     one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often tougher than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. The beauty of the Chugach Mountains is a great plus for this river. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. The put-in is not too far from Anchorage, as you can see on the road map further down. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Getting some   good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. Briefly about the general area: Near Bird Creek you stumble on the Bird Creek Trail which is a perfect hiking trail. Going to Chugach State Park near Bird Creek is a delightful thing to do. Not much precipitation falls here at Bird Creek. The month of September is the wettest with most of the rain, and April is when it's the driest. High temperatures at Bird Creek through the months of summer are in the 60's, and during the night it cools down to the 50's. High temperatures during the wintertime are normally in the 10's; night lows in the 0's for Bird Creek.
