Alaska whitewater, Gravel Creek

Matanuska-Susitna county, Gravel Creek Glacier to Matanuska River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS IV+     11.5 miles
This section of Gravel Creek is 11.5 miles long and it is classified as a class IV+ section by American Whitewater. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Gravel Creek Glacier to Matanuska River section is one of them. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good spots for that around here. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while will make
you glad you came. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so pack your camp stove. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Alaska tend to be more challenging than the national average,
so keep in mind that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. The beautiful scenery of Matanuska-Susitna Borough and the playfulness of the water beats anything. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The wild scenery of the Talkeetna Mountains is great. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
