  The Paxson Lake to Sourdough Campground stretch of Gulkana River in Valdez-Cordova Census Area Borough is 81 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III section. The nature scenery of Valdez-Cordova Census Area Borough and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water attract people from near and far. The Alaska Range scenery is wonderful. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking,
    either way this area has a pretty small number of paddling places. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. A good workout
and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Alaska is often more difficult than elsewhere, so better not forget that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. A stretch this long is of course too much for a one day trip, perfect for a real wilderness adventure. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're  
all set.

Briefly about the general area:
Gulkana River is pretty waterless frequently. July is the month that gets the most rain while April is commonly the driest month. Throughout the long summer days highs here at Gulkana River get into the 70's, and through the night it cools down to the 40's. High temperatures throughout the winter are normally in the 0's; after the sun is down throughout the wintertime temperatures at Gulkana River fall into the-20's.
