Alaska whitewater, Lake Creek

Matanuska-Susitna county, Chelatna Lake to Yentna River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS III+     55 miles
The starting point is not too far from Anchorage, as you can see on the road map further down. The wonderful Alaska scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water attract people from near and far. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because
it is a very popular destination. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. The Chelatna Lake to Yentna River stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system. The Chelatna Lake to Yentna River section
of Lake Creek in Matanuska-Susitna Borough is 55 miles long and it is classified as a class III+ section by American Whitewater. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so don't forget that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. When you're paddling down a Alaska Range river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. A stretch this long is of course too much for a one day
trip, perfect for a real wilderness adventure. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you won't find many other paddling places.

Briefly about the general area:
At Lake Creek you don’t see much rain. The month with most of the rain is September while April is the month with the least amount of precipitation. All through the warm months highs here at Lake Creek reach the 60's; during summer nights temperatures are in the 40's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 20's, and overnight lows at Lake Creek during the winter commonly dip into the 0's.
