Whitewater paddling here in the Chugach Mountains is a great experience. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so pack your sleeping bag. or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good spots for that around here. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The Portage Lake to Turnagain Arm stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river
| system. If you're coming from Anchorage it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Alaska are often more challenging than in other states, so keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not | |

Briefly about the general area: Places like Chugach National Forest are good to check out, and a cool spot to visit is Explorer Glacier. Now, you may feel that's lots but there's even more amusing things
to do here in the Chugach Mountains. The skiing at Alyeska is good. Portage River sees pretty high levels of precipitation. Most of the rain falls through October while May is the month with the least amount of precipitation.
For the period of the days of summer at Portage River highs are typically in the 60's while night lows are usually in the 40's. Daytime highs through the wintertime are in the 20's, and night lows through the winter for Portage River tend to be in the 10's.
