CLASS V     16 miles
  The Denali Park Road Bridge to Stampede Road stretch of Savage River in Denali Borough is 16 miles long and has been rated as a class V section by American Whitewater. The average Alaska whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master than those in other states, so don't forget that the rivers in this state are less manageable. The beautiful scenery of Alaska and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here
    and paddle. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Denali Park Road Bridge to Stampede Road
section is one of them. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you won't find many other paddling rivers. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your camp stove. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. If you're coming from Anchorage it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, there's a road map  
further down the page with more info on that. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The Alaska Range scenery is wonderful.

Briefly about the general area:
At Savage River through the summertime highs are in the 70's. Once the sun is down it plunges down to the 50's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 0's while the cold winter nights at Savage River are in the-20's. Savage River is pretty dry generally. July is the month that gets the most rain; April is the month with the least moisture.
