Alaska whitewater, Sheep River

Matanuska-Susitna county, Close to Glacier to Talkeetna River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS IV(V+)     50 miles

Could anyone there furnish the complete length of the Sheep River? Thank you. Says Larry L. Miller

This stretch of Sheep River in Alaska is 50 miles long and it is classified as a class IV(V+) section by American Whitewater. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. The starting location is a
short drive from Anchorage, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a pretty small number of paddling rivers. You might have
to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. Whitewater paddling here in the Talkeetna Mountains is a great experience. The nature scenery of Alaska and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip
here worthwhile. A stretch this long is of course too much for a one day trip, so make sure you pack enough food along with your camping gear. The Close to Glacier to Talkeetna River stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system. The campgrounds here at Sheep River are pretty good.

Briefly about the general area:
From a rainfall point of view Sheep River is a pretty common location. August is the wettest month with most rain; the driest month of the year is May. Summertime at Sheep River arrives with high temperatures in the 60's while nighttime lows are generally in the 40's.
