Arkansas whitewater, Big Piney Creek

Johnson county, Highway 12to Helton's Farm section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II+     10 miles
The beautiful scenery of Johnson County and the water flowing gracefully down Big Piney Creek have people coming here. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Harrison, as you can see on the road map further down. This stretch of Big Piney Creek is 10 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II+ section. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too. Not too many hotels
nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time in nature have people coming from far and near. For all you camping
people there are campgrounds nearby. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so go ahead and pack your sleeping bag. The Boston Mountains scenery is wonderful. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of spots for that. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Arkansas are often more forgiving than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers
in this state are not as hard as elsewhere.

Briefly about the general area:
Big Piney Creek is right by the Grassy Point Trail, and a visit to Ozark National Forest invigorates the spirit. You definitely have to adore the Boston Mountains. Hiking along the Gunter Trail is nice fun. The high level of rainfall makes Big Piney Creek a reasonably wet place. The month with most of the rain is May, and January is when it's the driest. At Big Piney Creek during the warm months highs are in the 90's, and the night is somewhat cooler of course, usually in the 60's. For the duration of the winter highs are in the 40's; overnight lows at Big Piney Creek through the winter mostly fall into the 20's.
