Arkansas whitewater, Salado Creek

Independence county, Camp Tahkotah to US 167 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II(III)     10 miles
If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Arkansas you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so keep in mind that many of the sections in this state are safe for beginners. This section of Salado Creek is 10 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II(III) section of whitewater. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Batesville, as you can see on the road map further down. And of course,
there are campgrounds nearby. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. A bit of exercise and a
chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. The nature scenery of Independence County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so go ahead and pack your sleeping bag. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Camp Tahkotah to US 167 section is one of them. Since you're on this
site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you won't find many other paddling spots. When you're paddling down a Boston Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too.

Briefly about the general area:
Here at Salado Creek you'll perhaps meet some folks from Pleasant Plains. Salado Creek is a wet place that gets a lot of rainfall. Of all the months in a year March is the one with the most rain while January is the month with the least amount of precipitation. Throughout the long summer days here at Salado Creek, high temperatures usually reach the 90's with nighttime lows in the 60's.
