The natural beauty of Shasta County and the cool fresh water beats anything. The starting location is a short drive from Redding, as you can see on the road map further down. The Hydro to Highway 44 section of Bear Creek in California is 9.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV(V+) section. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. This stretch |
has has enough mileage, suitable for an afternoon trip. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. The nearby hotels
| are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with not too many other spots for that. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in California tend to be more challenging than the national average, so don't forget that rivers here are less forgiving. The Southern Cascade Range scenery is wonderful.
