California whitewater, Mad River

Trinity county, North and South Fork confluence to Barry Creek Road section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS III     5.8 miles
The nature scenery of Trinity County and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. Whitewater paddling here in the Coast Ranges is a great experience. There are campgrounds quite
near the river where you can camp. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. The North and South Fork confluence to Barry Creek Road stretch is one of a few paddling
stretches in this river system. On this section you do get some distance, you can easily run it on an afternoon. The put-in is not too far from Ukiah, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The North and South Fork confluence to Barry Creek Road section of Mad River is 5.8 miles long and is a class III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature
are great attractions for lots of people. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination.

Briefly about the general area:
There is a tremendous hiking trail in close proximity to Mad River called the Ben Arthur Trail, and while you're here why not stop by Secret Gulch. Life's too short to enjoy all the entertaining things in the Coast Ranges. On a pleasant day at Mad River you can take a hike along the Rough Gulch Trail. High temperatures at Mad River throughout the summer are in the 90's. For the duration of the dark hours of summer temperatures drop down into the 50's.
