The natural beauty of California and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream beats anything. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in California are harder than the national norm, so keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Eureka-Arcata-Fortuna, as you can see on the road map further down. The beauty of the Coast Ranges is a great plus for this |
river. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your camp stove. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around
| here you'll find a large number of good spots. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature will have you coming back for more. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Briefly about the general area: At Mad River you always meet someone from Korbel. Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park is a pleasant
site; don't leave Mad River without first going for a hike along the Grouse Creek Tractor Way. This river is a great place to visit. Mad River is a good location of common rain. Most of the rain falls through November while
July is commonly the driest month. During the summertime, highs regularly are in the 60's at Mad River. All through the moonlight hours it's commonly in the 50's.
