California whitewater, McCloud River Shasta county, McCloud Reservoir to Lake Shasta section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS III-IV     24 miles   The wonderful Shasta County scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so if you're not from around here don't forget that the rivers in this state are less manageable. This stretch of McCloud River in California is 24 miles long and is according to American Whitewater     a class III-IV section of whitewater. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. This stretch is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so pack your sleeping bag. The put-in is not too far from Redding, as you can see on the road map further down. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling rivers. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. The Southern   Cascade Range scenery is wonderful. The McCloud Reservoir to Lake Shasta section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system. Briefly about the general area: White Rock is something you shouldn't miss since you're here at McCloud River, and since you're here you can take a hike along the Crags Trail. Just can't get enough of the Southern Cascade Range. A good site like Castle Crags State Park in the vicinity of McCloud River is too fine to leave out; you can have a pleasant hiking adventure along the Nelson Flat Trail. This river is so good. McCloud River commonly gets a great deal of precipitation.
