California whitewater, Pit River

Shasta county, Lake Britton to Pit 3 Powerhouse section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS III-IV     6 miles
The Lake Britton to Pit 3 Powerhouse section of Pit River is 6 miles long and has been rated as a class III-IV section by American Whitewater. The beautiful scenery of Shasta County and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Redding, as you can see on the road map further down. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too. There
are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. The average California whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to
be harder to run than those in other states, so don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, suitable for an afternoon trip. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking,
either way around here you won't find a large number of other rivers. The Southern Cascade Range scenery is wonderful.

Briefly about the general area:
Places like McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park are delightful to take a look at, and you'll meet a lot of folks from Burney here. Yep, outdoors enjoyable stuff truly is bountiful here in the Southern Cascade Range. There is a good hiking trail next to Pit River called the Pacific Crest Trail - section 17, and going for a hike on the Coal Mine Trail is always a good adventure. This river is a great place to visit. Much rain falls at Pit River.
